The project aims to understand the deposition and characterisation of thin film optical materials to determine the important parameters that control the deposition process. This will be achieved through the use of quantum mechanical modelling of the bonding arrangements to develop new potentials for the modelling of growth. We will further develop techniques for the modelling of long time scale events to model the deposition process itself. Combined atomistic and finite element based modelling will be used to investigate the mechanical properties of the films and ab-initio techniques for the modelling of the optical properties.
The project is funded by the EPSRC under the materials modelling initiative and is in collaboration with Pilkington Glass and Applied Multilayers.
